Remember the other R's- Reduce and Reuse

R's.jpg

Like many people, this image of a triangle made of three arrows is ingrained in my head from childhood. But, though it represents three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle, somehow we forget the first two. We see it all over packaging but deceptively these may not be recyclable or there is still waste generated in the recycling process. So lets look at the fist two R’s before going straight to recycle.

Reduce

As consumers we can push company to stop focusing profits from limited and one time use items,

Speak with your purchasing:

  • Quality products that last.

    • These may cost more up front, but you will spend less if you are not continuing to replace again and again.

  • Food and lifestyle items with limited packaging or packaging that can be composted.

    • Farmers markets and bulk shops are great.

  • Reusable items to replace one time use items.

    • Politely refuse the one time use bag, straw, plastic cup, or other item.

  • Consider purchases instead of buying impulsively.

Reuse

This is central to my designs and I have seen some amazing innovations from other designers.

Within your lifestyle consider reusing material:

  • Glass

  • Boxes

  • Plastics

    • Wash and reuse plastics intended for one time use.

    • Replace these with items that can be reused longer like silicone bake sheets and bags instead of tin foil and plastic zipper bags.

  • Food Scraps

    • Compost of course! You will reduce waste and get some lovely rich soil out of it.

  • Supplies

  • Clothing

    • Buy at brick and motor or online consignment shops.

    • Repair minor damage with a few stitches or a tailor.

    • Use really worn clothes for cleaning.
