Plastic less

Have you heard of the Plastic Free July Challenge? Almost everything we buy is sold in one time use plastic packaging. When we put this plastic in a waste bin it is whisked away so we do not need to be bothered by it. However, so little of this plastic can be or is recycled 1 for 1. Going plastic free is a process. I have been making small changes in my own lifestyle. Reducing plastic waste and my overall environmental impact has been a focus for the apparel and lifestyle items I place my art on.

Lifestyle items to help reduce plastic waste:

This is a great way to stay hydrated without plastic bottles the vending machine. If you are not a water drinker, fill it with iced tea or another infused drink. I have canteen style and insulated bottles.

Bring your morning coffee or tea with you from home. Or ask your favorite coffee shop to fill your mug instead of their one time use cup with plastic lids and stoppers. Reduce waste, keep your drink hot longer, and enjoy original art.

Use a durable mug for indoor and outdoor activities that can keep up with the dirt and grunge of campsites. This is also a great snack container for little ones as a plastic free option that will not shatter.

Buying organic cotton can help reduce harmful pesticides in our environment. These totes are great to keep rolled up and on hand so you do not need a plastic bag for last minute errands. Or, use one as a catch-all for outings.

When it comes to plastic waste, it is easy to overlook the microplastic in our clothing which also has a detrimental impact on our environment. In addition to the the organic cotton shirts, the manufacturing of these recycled fibers shirts reduce carbon emissions and landfill waste.

food prep and storage

I use glass storage containers including jars from previous pantry items I have purchased. I also use reusable silicone pouches instead of plastic wrap and bags.

soaps and shampoo

I have switched to bars for hand soap, shampoo, dish soap, and even dog shampoo. You may need to try a couple styles but you can get quality soap and shampoo without the plastic bottles.

cleaning supplies

There is a lot on innovation happening with cleaning supplies to reduce plastic. I now use concentrated cleaners in glass vials, a reusable glass spray bottle, a stain remover stick bar, and window/mirror cloths that only require a bit of water.

The products I print on are not perfect when it comes to plastic waste, but it is a process and there are better options becoming available on a regular basis.
