Awagami Paper

I found an Awagami sumi-ink painting pads of paper shortly after moving to Japan, which I have used for my “Akai” series.

When a client requested a large commission combining the various images I used in the Akai series, I looked up Awagami Factory and learned I could order the largest single piece of paper I have ever purchased, which I cut up for the 1 meter by 1.5 meter ink painting.

We took a lovely road trip in Japan over Golden Week including a stop at the Awagami Factory. I really was excited to visit their Factory to see where they make so many forms of paper and browse their shop.

70% bamboo and 30% recycled fibers.

I LOVE their bamboo paper for a number of reasons. They create a few varieties to best suit sumi-ink painting, watercolor, printmaking, or mixed mediums. It is acid-free, so the color will not distort with time. Best of all it is eco-friendly; made from 70% bamboo, a sustainable resource, and 30% recycled washi or kozo fibers.
